Wagging Tails

THE WAGGING TAILS OF “LULABELL”
Children's fiction

“Lulabell”
“Lulabell!” comes the call of my name from downstairs.

Now I am Lulabell!
Well my name is Lula actually but I answer to Lulabell too because that is what my best friend calls me.

My bestfriend is called Tamster!
A funny looking creature really as she only has two legs, no fur and no tail.
I can see past these strange things about her though because she loves me very much.

Let me tell you about myself…
I am a dog!
As dogs go, I am medium size but larger than life when it comes to energy.
I have short white fur and a few black spots on my ears. Of course I am very cute, that goes without saying!

I am a good dog mostly, but between you and me, sometimes I play up.
I only do it to get more attention. I love, love, love attention!
Don’t get me wrong, Tamster gives me all the attention I should need but a dog can never have enough attention!

“Lulabell, lets go for walkies!”  shouts Tamster up the stairs.

Ah now that is music to my ears! Oh I wonder where we are going today?
Better get myself ready.
Right! A quick stretch then down the stairs I go.

Now where is my lead? Ah there it is on the table. I shall sit down right next to it and keep my eye on it to let Tamster know where it is. I can not let her forget it as we need it so I can  make sure she doesn’t get lost when we are out.

Only a few minutes more to wait now.

Don’t laugh but I have to tell you, Tamster has to put outdoor paws on her two legs before we go. I told you she was a funny creature!
Outside paws or no outside paws does not matter to me. Besides I do not think it bothers her either.
We can not all be perfect and I am perfect enough for the both of us.

“Ök Lulabell, shall we have a walk by the river today?”

Did I hear that right? THE RIVER! Woof woofity woof! I wag my tail to that!
I am so excited and my tail is wagging so much that I am sure if I am not careful, my paws will be off the ground and I will be in flight!

Now let me tell you all of the reasons why I am so excited about walkies by the river!

The river is the best place to go when you fancy a good old sniff about. Oh the smells!
Let me start by telling you about the smells!

Talk about a fragrance festival! An odour overloader! It’s a full on pawfume party! The ultimate scent sensation!

Imagine the best of the best smells all together. That alone, makes it the canine carnival that dogs all over the world can only dream of.  My nose is wet just thinking about it.

Then there is the food! Oh I am drooling already.

There are apple cores, burnt BBQ bits, crisps of every kind, doughnuts, egg sandwich crusts, fish cooked and uncooked, grass flavoured and unflavoured, horse manure, ice cream, ice lollies, chips. Just about everything all on the ground waiting for you.

Sometimes not just scraps either. Would you believe I once found a whole sausage complete with the roll and tomato sauce.

I could smell it from a hundred dog steps away and I knew then it was going to be a treat to top all treats.

Can you imagine my delight when I found it in its untouched and complete state of glory.
I felt like my guard dog angel had come down from the kennels in the sky and placed it there just for me. That was a good day.

On top of all that there are the birds at the river!
Not only do you get the bigger birds, you get the bigger birds that prefer to waddle on the river banks instead of perch in the trees.

Although I can never catch any of them. I am not a cat afterall and glad of that! It is all about the chase.

Chasing a bird which goes into the river is so much more fun than chasing a bird that flies into a tree. Don’t just take my word for it, ask any dog still young and fit enough to chase the birds.

Last but not least, I love a quick dip in the river.

I am not one to dip my paw in first. I have a run up and leap right in making sure I splash everything and everyone around me. After a swim, I find nothing more satisfying than a good shake off and soaking everything and everyone around me again.

Us dogs are proud to be admired for our swimming. It is truly an honour that we have helped those of you like Tamster, with only two legs to learn to swim using the doggy paddle.    .

 “Come on Lulabell, lets go”

I must not keep Tamster waiting. Time for my walkies so it is woof woof from me for now.

I hope you come back soon. There is so much more I want to share with you.
